Alpina D3 Biturbo Review: The Ultimate Diesel Performance Touring Car

Why does the Alpina D3 Biturbo, as a diesel estate, make those in the know keep looking back? The answer lies right here. Today, we take an in-depth look at the latest generation of the Alpina D3 Biturbo, the Alpina D3 S. It possesses beast-level torque yet retains a gentleman’s elegance. BMW has formally acquired the Alpina brand. In this new era, this car ultimately showcases the independent Buchloe manufacturer’s spirit. So, is it the world’s finest all-rounder? More importantly, does it deserve the title of “Ultimate Diesel Performance Estate”?

Who is Alpina? The Mysterious Manufacturer from Buchloe

Before we dive into the driving experience, we must first introduce Alpina’s unique pedigree. Many outsiders simply regard it as a tuning firm, but that perception is completely wrong. Alpina is a genuine automobile manufacturer rooted in Buchloe, Germany. Since 1965, the company has worked closely with BMW, yet its offering goes far beyond simple power upgrade kits. Recently, BMW completed the acquisition of the Alpina brand, a handover that officially took effect in early 2026. However, the company’s car-building philosophy has never changed. Engineers take a standard BMW from the factory. They deeply rework its engine, gearbox, suspension and aerodynamic components. What finally emerges is a finished product. It is more refined, more luxurious, and possesses greater unique charm than the original BMW. This is the unique magic of Alpina.

Engine: A Torque Monster, King of the Road

Under the bonnet, the heart of this car is astonishing. A 3.0-litre straight-six twin-turbo diesel engine powers the Alpina D3 S. Alpina’s team replaced the pistons with high-strength items and fitted a larger intercooler. They then matched everything with a full bespoke ECU calibration. The final result is truly exciting: a combined output of 350 hp. Even more noteworthy, it boasts a staggering 730 Nm of peak torque. In real-world driving, this translates to an immensely strong shove in the back. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. At the same time, the top speed reaches 274 km/h.

Yet this beast also knows restraint. Lift off the throttle to cruise on the open road, and it instantly becomes a highly efficient long-distance cruiser. Gently press the accelerator, and that enormous, almost frightening torque is always at your service. Compared to high-strung petrol beasts that need hard revving, this feeling is a completely different kind of luxury. We especially love the effortless composure and the instant, on-tap power in any gear.

Ride and Chassis: The Art of Balancing Comfort and Handling

Next, let’s talk about Alpina’s true magic – finding the golden balance. An ordinary high-performance car often sacrifices everyday ride comfort in pursuit of ultimate lap times. But the Alpina D3 S completely breaks this compromise. Our test car rode on elegant 20-inch wheels, yet over bumpy surfaces the suspension’s bump absorption is simply jaw-dropping. Moreover, the cabin’s isolation from wind and tyre noise is first-class. In this car, you feel absolutely none of the coarseness and vibration typical of hardcore modified cars.

But that absolutely does not mean it’s a wallowy softie in the corners. Pirelli P Zero tyres and BMW’s superb xDrive all-wheel-drive system give the D3 S utterly tenacious grip on the road. When you aggressively carve into a tight bend, the car keeps body roll to an absolute minimum. The steering feedback isn’t as rich as a thoroughbred sports car’s. This is partly because a limited-slip differential is an optional extra. Yet its precision is still impressive. Overall, this capacious estate always manages to feel smaller than its physical size when you’re behind the wheel – exceptionally agile.

Interior and Practicality: Understated Luxury for Daily Use

Step inside, and a familiar yet elegant world presents itself. Although the overall layout comes from the standard BMW 3 Series, Alpina’s exclusive luxury details are everywhere. The classic Alpina blue dials with red needles create an exquisitely tasteful driving atmosphere. On the steering wheel, fine green stitching and hand-stitched Lavalina leather silently speak of this car’s exceptional value. Alpina retains the traditional round steering wheel and plentiful physical buttons. Compared to radical all-touch designs, this ergonomic consideration clearly understands the driver’s heart better.

As an estate, its practicality is exemplary. The rear seats split and fold in a flexible 40:20:40 configuration. This allows you to carry long items like skis while still leaving comfortable seats for four passengers. Boot space in its standard state is already very generous, at around 500 litres. Even more thoughtful, the rear window opens upwards independently of the tailgate. In a tight car park, if you need to quickly grab or stow a small item, this clever design proves truly priceless.

Market Competition: ALPINA vs. The World

Its direct rivals include the Audi S4 Avant and BMW’s own M340d Touring. A regular BMW M340d produces 340 hp and 700 Nm of torque – already very strong. Yet the Alpina D3 S, with 355 hp and 730 Nm, firmly sits above it. Compared with its German diesel flagship siblings, the D3 S’s power advantage is crystal clear. As for the Audi S4 Avant, you should not underestimate its V6 diesel engine’s capability. Yet Alpina appears more seasoned and powerful when it comes to ultimate performance.

Of course, we must be clear about one thing. In terms of absolute lap times on a track, the Alpina cannot match pure petrol performance beasts. If your only goals are ultimate driving engagement and lap times, turn left and check out the BMW M3 Touring. However, Alpina offers a different kind of greatness: silent yet devastatingly enormous torque on the motorway. Petrol cars struggle to replicate this.

Final Verdict: The Ultimate Diesel Performance Estate

Does it live up to its name? The answer is unequivocally yes. Indeed, you might find a pure sports car that pulls harder through corners. Or you might find an electric estate with even more terrifying instantaneous punch. However, the Alpina D3 S blends outstanding fuel economy, monstrous torque and top-notch ride comfort. No other car does it so seamlessly. In any era, this car is one of the most outstanding examples of engineering achieving the best of both worlds. Therefore, we confidently declare the Alpina D3 S Biturbo the most perfect definition of the term “Ultimate Diesel Performance Estate”.
